GREATER WORKS

Scriptures are cited from the King James (Authorized) Version, unless stated otherwise.

Question: What are the “greater works” that Jesus’ disciples will do than that which Jesus performed (John 14: 12)?

Answer: John 14: 12: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

Our Lord performed many miracles during His earthly ministry, such as opening blind eyes, unstopping deaf ears, raising the dead, stilling the tempest, etc. Obviously, none of His followers have ever been able to do “greater works” than these. The “greater works” that Jesus refers to must be of a different nature, or upon a larger scale, both of which are true.

Let us note the last expression of the verse – “because I go unto my Father.” When our Lord had ascended on high, and had presented the merit of His sacrifice on behalf of His followers, He could then bestow the holy spirit of sonship upon those who, through faith and obedience, would become members of His Church. By receiving the holy spirit, or power of God, they would be enabled to accomplish the “greater works” of opening the spiritually blind eyes, unstopping the spiritually deaf ears, raising to spiritual life those who were dead in trespasses and sins, and stilling the tempests of the soul. From the Divine standpoint, these are far greater works than physical healing, etc.

Furthermore, when the Church is reigning with the Lord during the Mediatorial Reign, the dead will be raised, and she will be engaged in the work of healing, blessing and restoring to full life, health, joy and happiness the people of the earth on a world-wide scale. The promise is that all the families of the earth will be blessed through “The Seed of Abraham” – Jesus and the members of His Body – the Church (Genesis 22: 18) (Galatians 3: 27-29). When our Lord healed the sick and raised the dead, they were only partially restored, and only for a limited time. But during the Millennial Age Kingdom, the obedient will be fully restored to human perfection, and for the faithful, it will be everlasting.
