Question: Did Jesus exist before becoming a human being?
Answer: By comparing John 1: 1 with John 1: 14, the Apostle John identifies Jesus as the Word or Logos (in the Greek) and as the “only begotten of the Father.” He was with God as a spiritual being and “was made flesh,” that is, He became a human being, by the transferring of His life from the spiritual, or heavenly plane, to the human plane. John 1: 14 reads:
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Some other proof texts include:
John 1: 10: “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.”
John 1: 18: “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”
John 3: 16, 17: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
Jesus Himself speaks of His pre-human existence a number of times as the following Scriptures testify:
Luke 10: 18: “And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”
John 3: 12, 13: “If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man [which is in heaven” – many authorities omit these words].
John 6: 38: “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”
John 6: 51 (first part): I am the living bread which came down from heaven.”
John 8: 42: “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.”
John 8: 58: “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”
John 16: 5: “But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?”
John 17: 5: “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
John 17: 18: “As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”
